Pilates is an exercise method, designed to elongate (make more flexible), strengthen and restore the body to balance. Classes will focus on specific areas individually whilst using exercises that integrate the whole body. The body can be restored to optimum function by using the postures to re-educate the way you move. You can exercise your way to mental and physical relaxation.
Each and every exercise is built around eight basic principals:
- Relaxation
- Co-ordination
- Alignment
- Stamina
- Concentration
- Centring (using core muscles around the centre of the body)
- Breathing
- Flowing movements
Pilates creates a strong core
By working with the deep muscles around the waist (back and stomach) ‘core stability’ is achieved, and then maintained through increasingly complex movement sequences. The body becomes long, lean and strong. The body is slender, but with a hidden strength under a healthy muscle tone.
Osteopaths, physiotherapists and general practitioners recommend Pilates as one of the safest forms of exercise today. Pilates can be beneficial for just about everyone, regardless of age and fitness level.
